In a dramatic turn of events, South Korea’s National Assembly voted on Friday to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, citing his alleged involvement in an insurrection following the controversial declaration of martial law by his predecessor earlier this month.

The impeachment motion, which garnered unanimous support from the 192 lawmakers present, underscores the heightened political tensions gripping the nation.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik, who announced the outcome of the vote, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “I announce that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s impeachment motion has passed. Out of the 192 lawmakers who voted, all 192 voted to impeach,” Woo declared during the Assembly’s session.

The overwhelming vote reflects deep-seated dissatisfaction within the legislature and growing public concern about the government’s recent actions.

The crisis began when Han’s predecessor declared martial law, a move that many South Koreans and international observers viewed as an overreach of executive power. In the weeks that followed, widespread protests erupted across the country, with citizens demanding a return to democratic governance and the protection of civil liberties.

Han, who assumed the role of acting president in the wake of his predecessor’s controversial actions, faced mounting criticism for what opponents described as complicity in the suppression of dissent.

Lawmakers leading the impeachment effort accused Han of actively participating in the insurrection, citing his alleged role in facilitating actions that undermined democratic principles.

“This is not just a matter of one individual’s misconduct. It is about preserving the integrity of our democracy and ensuring accountability at the highest levels of government,” said one opposition lawmaker who supported the motion.

The impeachment vote marks the second time in South Korea’s modern history that a sitting president or acting president has been impeached, underscoring the extraordinary political turmoil the nation currently faces.

Analysts suggest that the unanimous vote reflects not only discontent with Han’s leadership but also a broader desire within the National Assembly to restore public trust in governance.

Following the impeachment, South Korea’s Constitutional Court will review the motion to determine whether Han should be formally removed from office.

Until the court reaches its decision, Han will be suspended from his duties, with the deputy prime minister expected to step in as acting leader.

As the nation awaits the Constitutional Court’s ruling, the impeachment has sparked both relief and uncertainty among South Koreans.

Many view the decision as a necessary step toward addressing governmental overreach, while others worry about the potential for further instability in an already volatile political landscape.
