North Korean Troops Face Heavy Losses in Ukraine War
- North Korean soldiers aiding Russia in Ukraine are reportedly used as “expendable” forces.
- White House confirms high casualties from ineffective “human wave” tactics.
- Many soldiers are allegedly taking their own lives to avoid capture.
The White House has accused Russia and North Korea of treating North Korean troops as expendable in the ongoing Ukraine war. According to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, these soldiers are being sent on futile mass assaults in Ukraine’s Kursk region, leading to significant casualties.
South Korea’s intelligence estimates about 1,000 North Korean soldiers were killed or wounded in just a week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims nearly 3,000 casualties among these troops since their deployment began. Kirby highlighted reports of North Korean soldiers taking their lives rather than risking capture, fearing repercussions for their families back home.
The heavy losses are attributed to unfamiliar battlefield conditions and the inability to counter advanced tactics like drone warfare. Kirby noted that North Korean soldiers appear heavily indoctrinated, continuing attacks despite clear signs of failure.
South Korean officials believe Pyongyang is using this conflict to gain combat experience and modernize its military. Meanwhile, North Korean state media reported a New Year’s message from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kim Jong Un, celebrating strengthened ties following a defense pact finalized in December.
