The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has assured the public that there is no need to panic over the recent outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) reported in some countries.

In a statement signed by its Director General, Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, NIMR emphasized its readiness to handle any potential outbreak in Nigeria. As the country’s top health research agency, NIMR is prepared to respond if needed.

The institute is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other government agencies to improve Nigeria’s readiness for health emergencies. NIMR also supports the public health advice from the NCDC and encourages everyone to follow these guidelines to stay safe.
The statement reads:
“In response to questions about our preparedness regarding the reported outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, we want to reassure Nigerians that NIMR is fully ready to act if necessary.

“We also support the advice given by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and urge the public to follow their guidelines to ensure safety,”it added.
