Former Real Madrid and Portugal defender Fábio Coentrão is under investigation for involvement in illegal seafood trade, according to Portugal’s food safety authority, ASAE.
The 36-year-old, who retired from professional football in 2021, transitioned to the fishing industry. Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias reported that Coentrão owns three fishing boats and began selling seafood after renting a warehouse seven months ago.

On Thursday, ASAE announced the suspension of operations at three illegal warehouses in northern Portugal and seized 17 tonnes of food products. One of the warehouses, housing a shellfish farm owned by Coentrão, was targeted for inspection.
At the site in the northern fishing port of Póvoa de Varzim, authorities found 12 seawater tanks containing lobsters and prawns. Over a tonne of shellfish was confiscated due to irregularities, including missing invoices and the absence of a valid trading license, ASAE confirmed.
