David Gaskell, Manchester United’s youngest-ever player, has passed away at 84. Gaskell made his debut for the club at just 16 years and 19 days old in October 1956 against Manchester City.
He played 11 seasons for United, winning two league titles and featuring in the 1963 FA Cup final, where he helped secure victory over Leicester City at Wembley.

A remarkable moment in Gaskell’s career came during the 1956 Charity Shield, where, as United’s fifth-choice goalkeeper, he was pulled from the crowd after the starting keeper was injured.
With borrowed boots, Gaskell played and was named man of the match in United’s 1-0 victory.
After leaving United in 1968, Gaskell went on to play for Wigan Athletic, Wrexham, and later spent time in South Africa and Kuwait.
