Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate, was attacked on Saturday morning at the Lagos City Marathon by a group of unidentified men.
The assailants also targeted journalists and members of Sowore’s crew, damaging cameras and other equipment.

Sowore shared a video of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that the attack was triggered after he and his team occupied a canopy following the 10km race. He alleged that the attackers forcibly seized a journalist’s camera and attempted to delete footage capturing the assault.

The activist, known for his participation in international marathons like the New York City Marathon, spoke about his passion for long-distance running in a press conference held a day before the race.
He emphasized that marathon running symbolizes resilience, a quality he believes is essential in activism.

“Marathon is all about resilience. If you can no longer run physically, you must use your mind to keep going. Activism requires the same strength because you are often punished for doing what’s right,” Sowore stated.
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is one of Africa’s biggest long-distance races, drawing thousands of participants, both local and international, for the 10km and full 42.5km events.

While the race itself was a celebration of endurance and sportsmanship, the reported attack on Sowore and his team cast a shadow over the event.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Sowore’s supporters have condemned the attack, calling for accountability and better protection for journalists covering public events.
