EKO HOT BLOG reports that Early detection of diabetes is crucial for effective management through diet, exercise, and medication. While symptoms of high blood sugar appear throughout the body, certain facial changes can serve as warning signs. Here are five indicators that may suggest elevated blood sugar levels:
1. Red or Swollen Face
High blood sugar can cause inflammation, leading to puffiness or redness, particularly around the eyes and cheeks. This occurs as the body retains water to manage excess glucose.
2. Fruity or Bad Breath
When blood sugar levels rise significantly, the body begins breaking down fat for energy, producing ketones. This can result in a fruity or acetone-like smell on the breath, a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which requires urgent medical attention.
3. Dry and Flaky Skin
Diabetes can reduce the skin’s ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness, flakiness, and itchiness. Dehydration caused by high blood sugar also decreases sweat and oil production, further exacerbating skin issues.
4. Darkened Skin Patches
A condition called Acanthosis Nigricans, linked to insulin resistance, can cause dark, velvety patches to appear on the neck, armpits, and even the face, particularly around the jawline. This can be an early warning sign of diabetes.
5. Pale or Yellowish Skin
Chronic high blood sugar may impact liver function, sometimes resulting in a yellowish skin tone. When the liver is overwhelmed by excessive glucose, its ability to process waste efficiently declines, affecting skin color.

While these signs can indicate high blood sugar, they are not definitive proof of diabetes. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and management. Early intervention can prevent serious complications such as kidney disease, nerve damage, and heart problems.
