The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is ramping up efforts to fight drug counterfeiting by adopting advanced technology.
Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, emphasized the need for innovative approaches as counterfeiters become increasingly sophisticated. Speaking at a sensitization event on the Green Book Traceability Project and Pediatric Policy in Kano, she highlighted the agency’s commitment to ensuring drug safety.

Adeyeye, represented by the Director of Post-Market Surveillance, Pharm. Bitrus Fraden, stated that tackling falsified and substandard drugs requires collective action beyond the regulator’s mandate.

A 2015 study estimated that over 122,000 children under the age of five die annually in sub-Saharan Africa due to substandard anti-malarial drugs. Fraudulent importers, she added, have been faking NAFDAC registration numbers to market counterfeit products.
However, the newly enacted NAFDAC Regulations 2024 aim to strengthen oversight by requiring all pharmaceutical products—whether manufactured, imported, exported, advertised, sold, or distributed in Nigeria—to carry a unique identifier.
