EKO HOT BLOG reports that this surge reflects ongoing volatility in the market. According to data from Genergo Networks, depot prices as of April 4, 2025, stood at ₦16,900,000 for 20 metric tons, translating to about ₦845 per kilogram. However, by the time gas reaches the consumer, prices are inflated by transportation, storage, retailer profit margins, and regional disparities.
Despite depot prices appearing lower, retail rates in February 2025 already hovered between ₦1,200 to ₦1,300 per kilogram, depending on the supplier and region. The current average of ₦1,120/kg suggests that pricing remains unstable, driven by supply chain challenges and varying economic pressures.
Looking back, Nigerians have witnessed a steady rise in gas prices. In April 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported the average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder was ₦4,642.27, showing a 0.69% increase from March. By August 2024, that figure had surged to ₦6,430.02, marking a 7.62% month-on-month increase. These hikes were largely attributed to the removal of subsidies, currency devaluation, and global energy price shifts.
In May 2023, the price for a 5kg cylinder was ₦4,360, averaging ₦872/kg. Comparatively, the new rate of ₦1,120/kg highlights how much more households now spend on basic energy needs, pushing some to return to firewood and charcoal as cheaper alternatives.

Price disparities remain across the country. As of August 2024, Benue and Sokoto states recorded the highest average for refilling a 5kg cylinder at ₦7,000, while Taraba had the lowest at ₦5,600.67. These regional differences emphasize the importance of market comparison before purchase.
Updated Cooking Gas Prices (Based on ₦1,120/kg):

As the cost of living continues to rise, many Nigerians are calling on the government to intervene and make domestic energy more affordable and accessible.
