Renowned Nigerian academic, politician, and diplomat, Professor Jibril Aminu, has passed away at the age of 85.
A family representative confirmed the news to journalists on Wednesday, with the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development in Adamawa State, Hon. Abdullahi Prambe, also verifying the development to Daily Trust.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Aminu, who turned 85 on August 25, 2024, was widely regarded as a towering figure in Nigeria’s academic, political, and diplomatic circles. Born in Song, Adamawa State, in 1939, he built a distinguished career that spanned medicine, education, public administration, and foreign relations.
He began as a Consultant Cardiologist before transitioning into academia and national service. His key roles included serving as Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Nigerian Ambassador to the United States. He was also a Senator representing Adamawa Central for eight years.
In his tribute, Prambe described Aminu as a mentor and a beacon of knowledge and leadership. “His contributions to education, healthcare, and governance will remain etched in our history,” he said.
Family sources have announced that Professor Aminu’s funeral will take place today at 2 PM, after the Zuhr prayer, at the Abuja National Mosque. However, the family is yet to release an official statement detailing the cause of death or additional funeral arrangements.

Professor Jibril Aminu’s death marks the end of a chapter in Nigeria’s political and academic history. Tributes are expected to pour in from across the country in the coming days.
