EKO HOT BLOG reports that the announcement was made on Sunday during a dinner reception at the Government House, Owerri, held to celebrate the players’ contributions to Nigeria’s 12th WAFCON title. Uzodinma said the gesture was to honour excellence and inspire more women to embrace sports.
“You have made Nigeria and Imo proud,” the governor said. “Each of you will receive ₦30 million and a plot of land in choice areas of Owerri. This is our way of celebrating your heroism and motivating young girls to dream big.”
The honoured players include Chiamaka Nnadozie (goalkeeper and captain), Jennifer Echegini, Tochukwu Oluchi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, and Ifeoma Onumonu. Members of the technical crew from the state were also rewarded.
Uzodinma praised President Bola Tinubu for being the first to celebrate the team’s success, noting that Imo State would continue to invest in sports to nurture future champions. He also urged young women to pursue their ambitions without fear, saying, “Compete for the best, push your limits, and don’t let anything hold you back.”
Commissioner for Sports Development, Obinna Onyeocha, commended the governor’s commitment to sports, describing the rewards as a reflection of his dedication to youth development.
The event, attended by government officials, traditional rulers, sports enthusiasts, and family members, underscored the pivotal role played by Imo-born stars in Nigeria’s WAFCON triumph.
