Declaring the programme open, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, said human error remains the leading cause of road crashes globally and in Nigeria, accounting for more than 75 per cent of accidents.
“Every driver here must consider themselves fortunate to participate in this training,” Mojola told participants.
“The knowledge and skills you are receiving today will not only make you safer behind the wheel but will also protect millions of Lagosians who rely on the BRT system for daily commuting.
This is part of the Commission’s commitment to reducing road crashes in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda.”
Mojola noted that more than five million people worldwide have benefitted from similar safety programmes, adding that Lagos hopes to replicate global best practices within its transport system.
The Managing Director of LBSL, Mr. Idowu Oguntona, said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to safe mobility in a megacity.
He disclosed that the BRT system has transported over 60 million passengers across its routes while maintaining an “impressive safety record.”
“Transportation is the lifeblood of a megacity like Lagos,” Oguntona said. “As an agency, we are committed to continuously upgrading our drivers’ capacity, because they carry the responsibility of millions of lives daily.”

Representing the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mr. Poju Fowokan commended the training and urged drivers to embrace personal responsibility for their conduct on the road. He described LBSL as a model for urban transport in Nigeria.
The sessions, facilitated by MTC Consult, included modules on accident causation, first aid, stress management, and modern traffic safety strategies, alongside scenario-based exercises.
Participants expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for investing in their professional development and pledged to apply the knowledge gained to ensure safer roads for all users.
