Rising comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has revealed that his journey into the entertainment industry was far from smooth, as his father strongly opposed his decision to pursue comedy.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the skit maker shared the experience during an interview with VJ Adams, explaining that his father had always envisioned him becoming a lawyer.

He recalled making repeated but unsuccessful attempts to secure admission to study Law before eventually settling for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where comedy found him.

According to Sabinus, he nurtured his craft in secret throughout his university years, producing skits and performing without his father’s knowledge. The truth only surfaced a year after graduation when his father stumbled upon his images on posters advertising comedy shows.
The discovery, he said, sparked immediate outrage. Sabinus recounted how his father fumed, questioning why his son would abandon law for what he dismissed as “a stupid business.” He noted that the rejection cut deep but did not derail his passion.

The comedian added that his father’s stance shifted only after he began earning from his craft and supporting the family financially. Over time, acceptance turned into encouragement as his popularity grew across social media and mainstream entertainment.
Sabinus’ experience mirrors that of many young Nigerians who face pressure to pursue conventional careers such as law, medicine, or engineering but find purpose in the creative industry.
He emphasised that passion and perseverance eventually win, no matter the opposition.
