Adesua Etomi, Ireti Doyle React As #ReformSARS Trends Again
Nollywood actress, Adesua Etomi, threw her weight behind calls by Nigerians on social media demanding for the reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad popularly known as SARS. Reports over the weekend alleged that a stray bullet from officers attached to the SARS unit shot dead a Nigerian youth, Kolade Johnson, who had gone to watch the match between English Premier League clubs, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs.
With the incident stirring an outcry and leading to hashtags including #EndSARS and #ReformSARS, the Wedding Party actress joined via a post on Instagram lamenting the seemingly unending abuse of power by policemen.
“I am so sick of the abuse of power by SARS. I am so sick of a government that turns deaf ears to the cries of its people.
“How many people have to die before something is done about this nonsense? Every other day, we hear stories of how citizens are beaten, killed, robbed, kidnapped by SARS.
“If a tree is producing rotten fruit, cut it down. This is Kolade. His only crime was watching football. That was all he was doing when a stray bullet hit him yesterday. A bullet fired by a SARS official. They fled the scene by the way. So who do we hold responsible?
“He has a son who now has to grow up without a father, all because some idiot was trigger happy.End Sars for justice for Kola. This has to end,” she wrote.
Although it later emerged that officers attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit attached to the Lagos State Police Command were responsible for the shot that killed the man, Nigerians are not assuaged enough to end the demand for better policing.
In her own reaction, fellow actress, Ireti Doyle, has expressed outrage over the matter, tweeting: “A nation that devours its young,” before adding: “The Police is a specialized service, not only music personnel be educated, there should also be proof of their mental and emotional stability. Too many unstable people (in and out of uniform) are walking around armed, and ‘licensed to kill’.”
