The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action on the country’s worsening security situation by declaring a state of emergency on insecurity.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the call was made in a statement issued by the association’s Senate President, Usman Nagwaza, who expressed concern over the impact of violent crimes on students and educational activities nationwide.

NANS also appealed for increased backing for the Ministry of Defence, stressing the need to equip the armed forces with adequate resources to confront criminal groups operating across the country.

The student body dismissed allegations linking the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to banditry, describing such claims as politically driven and unhelpful at a critical moment for national unity.
According to NANS, distracting accusations weaken collective efforts to restore peace and embolden criminal elements.

The group further called on Nigerians to support security agencies and reject narratives that undermine confidence in the military.
The Federal Government has continued to highlight ongoing reforms within the defence sector, including the upgrade of military equipment and the appointment of new leadership to strengthen coordinated security operations.
