EKO HOT BLOG reports that Wellington said the move was taken after extensive consultations and reflects the need for a stronger and more united opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027. He urged Labour Party supporters in all 23 local government areas of Rivers State to align with the ADC, which has been adopted by a coalition of opposition figures rallying around former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“We urge all Labour Party supporters in the 23 local government areas of Rivers State to join our leader, Mr Peter Obi, in the African Democratic Congress,” Wellington said.
He explained that the collapse of the party structure was driven by growing economic hardship and worsening insecurity across the country, stressing that the situation demands urgent and collective political action.
According to him, Nigerians who desire a change in leadership and governance must come together under a common platform to rescue the nation from its current challenges.
“The deteriorating state of our economy and the worsening insecurity have made it clear that this is a now or never moment for Nigeria,” Wellington added.
The Rivers LP faction chairman also made a direct appeal to members of the Obidient Movement, which formed the backbone of Obi’s support base during the 2023 presidential election, to fully embrace the ADC as the new vehicle for their political aspirations.
“We call on all members of the Obidient Movement to join this coalition for a better Nigeria,” he said.

The development follows Peter Obi’s recent defection from the Labour Party to the ADC after aligning with a coalition of opposition leaders preparing to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s expected re election bid in 2027. Obi’s move has continued to trigger similar realignments nationwide, with the Rivers State collapse regarded as one of the most consequential so far./
