- Umahi Directs Emergency Fixes on Failing Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Highway
- Says FG is already undertaking rehabilitation on about 60 km of the road corridor
- Umahi also revealed plans for a second phase of work
The Federal Government has directed the immediate commencement of palliative repairs on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road in a move to address severe deterioration and ease traffic congestion along the busy corridor.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the directive was issued by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during an inspection of the federal highway linking Lagos and Ogun states. Umahi explained that although about 22 km of the road were inspected, emergency repair works would concentrate on roughly 18 km identified as the most critically damaged sections.
According to the minister, the Federal Government is already undertaking rehabilitation on about 60 km of the road corridor, with construction being carried out in phases based on the level of urgency.
He noted that long-standing concession-related challenges and flawed engineering assumptions during previous construction contributed significantly to the road’s current condition.

Umahi said repair works would commence immediately, largely at night, to minimise disruption to traffic flow.
The intervention, he added, would prioritise failed sections that currently hinder the free movement of vehicles.
He further disclosed that badly damaged low-lying portions of the road would be reconstructed with concrete to improve durability and prevent recurring failures. The minister observed that the Ota-bound carriageway had suffered more extensive damage compared to the Lagos-bound side.
Umahi also revealed plans for a second phase of work, which would include full resurfacing of the highway, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights
He assured road users that once construction is completed, the concessionaire would take over the operation and maintenance of the road to ensure long-term sustainability.
