The Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Babatunde Hunpe, has announced a seven-day mourning period following the death of the Akran of Badagry, Oba Aholu Menu Toyi I.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the respected monarch, who was 89 years old, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, marking the end of a long and influential reign rooted in peace, unity, and cultural preservation.

Hunpe made the official announcement in Badagry, stating that the declaration was made with the approval of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He described the late Akran as a traditional ruler whose leadership helped sustain the cultural identity and historical pride of the Badagry Kingdom.

According to the council chairman, the mourning period is meant to give residents of Badagry the opportunity to reflect on the monarch’s selfless service, enduring values, and lifelong commitment to the growth of the local government, Lagos State, and Nigeria as a whole.
Hunpe further portrayed the late Akran as more than a royal figure, noting that he served as a link between generations, a guardian of tradition, and a source of wisdom and moral guidance to his people.
He extended condolences to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Badagry Local Government and Lagos State, the royal family, and the entire Badagry community, urging unity and calm during the mourning period.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also expressed sympathy with the family and people of Badagry over the monarch’s passing.
