Popular Oyo State media figure, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has formally entered the 2027 governorship race, announcing his intention to contest under the Accord Party.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Hamzat made the declaration on Saturday at a well-attended rally held at the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan, where he told supporters that his decision was inspired by what he described as a divine mandate rather than long-held political ambition.

The broadcaster, widely known for his grassroots-focused radio programme, said he never envisaged joining partisan politics or seeking elective office, explaining that his previous role in politics was limited to mobilising support for others.

“I never imagined I would belong to a political party or contest for office. I have always stood behind candidates as a supporter, but God had a different plan for me,” he told the crowd.
Hamzat made it clear that he would no longer campaign for any aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that he would personally fly the Accord Party’s flag in the Oyo governorship contest.
“Today, I openly declare my decision to adopt Accord Party as my platform and to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State,” he said.
The media personality further noted that his ambition was not driven by wealth, political godfathers, or the backing of those in power, insisting that his motivation was rooted in faith and popular support.

“I do not have money, I do not have political connections, and I am not supported by the government of the day. I am coming with God alone, and that is sufficient,” he said.
Hamzat attributed his wide acceptance across the state to years of advocacy for ordinary citizens, particularly the underprivileged, noting that his media work had consistently focused on giving voice to the people.

“I have always used my platform to speak for the people. Now, I want to take that responsibility further by serving directly and delivering development to the people of Oyo State,” he added.
The declaration has effectively confirmed long-standing speculation about Hamzat’s political ambition, which had been fuelled by circulating campaign slogans and imagery bearing the phrase “Oyo ń pè ọ́” (Oyo is calling).
Later on Saturday, Hamzat reinforced his announcement in a post on his official X account, writing, “My good people of Oyo State, your call has been answered. Interesting times ahead,” signalling his readiness for the political battle ahead
