The Lagos State Government has concluded the state finals of the World Robot Olympiad (WRO), with outstanding students from public schools emerging as winners and securing places to represent the state at the national championship.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the competition, themed “Robots Meet Culture,” was organised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and held at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu.

The event brought together young innovators from across Lagos to showcase their creativity, problem-solving skills and technological expertise through various robotics challenges.
Participants competed in categories including Robot Mission, Robot Sport, Future Innovators and Future Engineers, all designed to promote innovation and strengthen students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, praised the students, teachers and parents for their dedication to technology-driven education.
Represented by the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District VI, Mrs. Mojisola Christiana Yusuf, she encouraged the students to see themselves as cultural innovators capable of developing solutions to African challenges through technology.
She reiterated the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to equipping students with the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world.

According to her, the World Robot Olympiad provides a platform for students to develop critical skills such as teamwork, creativity, innovation and digital literacy, which are essential for future careers.
She also stressed that beyond winning medals and trophies, the competition offered valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration and personal development.
At the end of the contest, Igbo Owu Senior Secondary School and Akoka Junior High School emerged winners in the senior and junior categories of the Robot Mission challenge.
In the Robot Sport category, Army Cantonment Senior Girls Secondary School, Ojo, secured first place.
For the Future Innovators category, Lagos State Model College, Meiran, won the senior division, while Eva Adelaja Junior Girls School, Bariga, claimed victory in the junior category.
Eva Adelaja Senior Girls School, Bariga, also emerged winner in the Future Engineers category.
The victorious teams will now represent Lagos State at the World Robot Olympiad National Finals, where they will compete against top teams from across Nigeria for the opportunity to represent the country at the international championship.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting STEM education through strategic initiatives and partnerships aimed at preparing students for future opportunities in technology and innovation.
