According to Areh, the theme encourages every indigene of Onitsha to build on the community’s resilience and work together for a brighter future.

He described the Ofala Festival as the most important event in the traditional calendar of the Onitsha Kingdom, noting that it is deeply rooted in the customs and spiritual heritage of the people.
Areh explained that the celebration marks the annual public appearance of the Obi after a period of seclusion, during which the monarch is traditionally believed to have sought blessings and prosperity for the kingdom.
He added that the festival also commemorates the discovery of yam as a valuable food source, making it a celebration of thanksgiving, renewal and communal joy.

Beyond its traditional significance, the Ofala Festival has grown into a major cultural event featuring activities such as an international art exhibition, the Ofala Youth Carnival and medical, health and wellness outreach programmes for residents.
The annual event is expected to attract traditional rulers, government officials, cultural enthusiasts and visitors from across Nigeria and other parts of the world, further showcasing Onitsha’s rich cultural heritage and longstanding traditions.
