2027: Uncertainty Trails Single Opposition Candidate Proposal

Uncertainty has continued to surround the proposal for a single opposition presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election, with political parties and opposition figures expressing divergent positions on the arrangement.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the development followed a call by the Group of 100 Nigerians, led by former All Progressives Congress chieftain, Salisu Lukman, for opposition presidential candidates and political leaders to unite behind a single candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

The group, known as G100, warned that a divided opposition could struggle to defeat the incumbent administration.

Lukman called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, their respective running mates, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, as well as other opposition candidates, to put aside personal interests and consider the broader objective.

Earlier in the week, Lukman announced that the group would convene an opposition summit in Abuja on August 18.

The summit is expected to bring various opposition groups and political leaders together to discuss possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 election.

However, indications that the proposal could face challenges have emerged from some of the political parties and movements expected to participate.

Speaking to Punch, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku, Phrank Shaibu, said he could not confirm whether the former vice president would attend the proposed summit.

He said an official position on Atiku’s participation would be made public once his schedule was finalised.

“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar welcomes every genuine initiative aimed at strengthening democratic opposition and providing Nigerians with a credible alternative to the Tinubu administration.

“His attendance at the August 18 summit will, however, be communicated once his schedule and participation are finalised.”

Shaibu also commended the G100 initiative, saying Atiku had consistently advocated putting national interest ahead of individual or partisan considerations.

He said, “His Excellency has consistently maintained that the challenges confronting Nigeria require opposition parties, leaders and citizens of goodwill to put the national interest above individual or partisan considerations. There is considerable merit in building the broadest possible democratic coalition ahead of 2027.

“What is most important is that any process towards achieving that objective must be transparent, inclusive and democratic, and ultimately produce a candidate capable of earning the confidence of Nigerians.”

On the proposal for a single opposition candidate to challenge Tinubu, Atiku did not give a definite position.

He said he was consulting with political leaders and stakeholders across the opposition.

He described such consultations as necessary at this stage, stressing that the objective was to strengthen the opposition and provide Nigerians with an alternative.

He said, “At the appropriate time, the outcome of these consultations will be made public.”
