Alimosho General Hospital Celebrates World Glaucoma Day

The Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, on Monday 9th March, joined its counterparts around the world to celebrate the 2020 World Glaucoma Day set aside by the United Nations to advocate constant ophthalmological checks towards curbing the development of Glaucoma.

Speaking at the commemoration, the Medical Director, Dr. Madewa Adebajo, urged the participants to go for constant eye checks by medical experts to assess the severity of the eye pressure.

While stressing that more attention should be placed on eye care, the Medical Director described glaucoma as a hereditary eye impairment that can affect any class in society and also lead to irreversible blindness if not detected early.

According to a Consultant Ophthalmologist with the Hospital, Dr. Funmilola Taiwo, glaucoma refers to a group of diseases with characteristic visual field defect and optic nerve changes, where raised intraocular pressure is a risk factor.

Reiterating the need for continuous advocacy and sensitisation, Taiwo said “there is ample need to create awareness about patients living with glaucoma, as it creeps in like a silent thief, appearing almost invincible towards stealing sight in the environment”.

The Consultant ophthalmologist further noted that early presentation and routine check of patients could prevent blindness from glaucoma, stating that there was no external factor linked to the cause of the disease.
