The social media has been described as a transformative tool for the socio-economic development of the society and a powerful platform for dissemination of information.

Making the statement in an interview with Eko Hot Blog, Ms. Olivia Afun, added that it could also be used as a developmental tool in addressing the social maladies in the society.
Afun was the lady who recently was manhandled by the men of the Agbowa police division in Lagos.

Further extolling the power of the social media, Ms. Adun, who somewhat had gained the role of change agent, reiterated that the advent of the internet, digital technology had facilitated citizen journalism, by making it not just acceptable, but vital.

“I am a typical example of a citizen that exploited the power of social media to address a case of abuse of power, extortion, and injustice from the hand of Agbowa police officers.

“If you can reach a global audience with a video recording made in the corner of your living room in Agbowa that eventually led to the arrest of the officer involved, this is the power of social media. I harnessed the power of social media to secure justice”
If you recall, her story went viral attracting a whole lot of sympathy within and from across the global divide.

She, however, said that there was no doubt that social media had its downsides, but that should not make people demonise it.

For example, she cited the use of social media as a platform to propagate falsehood which has been the antithesis to peaceful coexistence and development, but that nonetheless, it has become an effective and transformative tool.

Ms Adun reminded people that social media was also consequential, in the sense that a 20-minute video recorded in the corner of my living room in the remote part of the world, could engender a global revolution.

Using her case as an example, she concluded that she would not have been able to get a huge response and eventual justice with the traditional media given the current situation in the country,

She, therefore, called on Nigerians not to keep quiet in the face of oppression, intimidation and police brutality but to use the power of social media to speak up.

It will be recalled that while the power of social media brought the issue into the limelight, the cooperation and the commitment of the commissioner of police and other well-meaning Nigerians towards the dispensation of justice was what ensured that justice was served.
