Today is  International Workers Day, otherwise known as Labour Day, it is a day observed each year on the first day of May to celebrate and salute the sacrifices, hard work and achievements of workers and also focus on the hazards faced by workers in the course of carrying out their various duties

Workers day, celebrated yearly as a public holiday in Nigeria and in some countries around the world is celebrated with public awareness, parades, and demonstration in all states across the country to promote Unity, Peace and productivity within the Nation’ work force as well as draw the attention of the government to the plight of workers as promoted by the International Labour Movement.

However, no such public gathering is taking place this time, as this year’s workers day comes amid the ravaging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which has spread to almost all the countries of the world, leaving almost two million people infected and more than one hundred thousand dead.

The pandemic has crippled the economies of many countries, worsening the conditions of many workers

This has resulted in a health crisis that has taken the attention of many countries away from building and improving the work force and  welfare of workers to battling the deadly Virus that is still spreading fast like wild fire around world.

The pandemic also exposed many health workers currently in the frontline of the battle to danger, as the world has lost many of them to the virus which they contacted while helping to curb the spread  and provide care for those already infected by the virus.

In view of the restrictions imposed by the government as part of measures to tackle COVID-19, especially regarding the need to maintain social distancing, workers are advised to celebrate this years May day in their various houses.

In declaring the day a public holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, the Ministry of Interior Raul, commended Nigerian workers for their resilience, patience and understanding, particularly in their support of the present administration’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
