Epe Division LG, LCDAs’ Partners CNI To Campaign Against Incessant Rape In The Area

Concerned NationBuilders Initiative (CNI), an NGO partners with Epe Division Local Government and Local Council Development Areas to fight against incessant rape in the ancient community.

The LG and LCDAs’ includes: Epe Central, Eredo and Ikosi-Ejirin.

The campaigners, with T-shirts and placards condemning rape and violence against girls, marched through the streets of Epe, Eredo, Ejinrin, Ikosi and visited markets, traditional rulers and the council secretariat in the area.

Eko Hot Blog reports that among the inscriptions on the placards were “Real Men Don’t Rape”, “Say No to Rape and all Kinds of Abuse”.

Others were “Say No to Violence Against Women”; “No to Domestic Abuse and Violence; “No to Women Assault and Sexual Offences.

Also, Muslim women, Chiefs and other relevant stakeholders want stiffer penalties for rapists.

Me Idris Tele-Olukoya, CNI Coordinator, said the Campaign was to raise awareness on rising cases of violence against women and girls.

“This is to create awareness on domestic violence against women, innocent children are being molested on daily basis.

“We notice that rape has become too many, we are coming out to walk against this evil.

“CNI wants to encourage our people to speak out, we are condemning this act and that is why we are out to let our people know that it is wrong to molest our children and girls,” he said.

Tele-Olukoya urged government at all levels to protect women and ensure rapists did not go unpunished.

He said that rapists should be given capital punishment to serve as deterrence to others.

“Our mothers too should take care of their children, they should be their children’s confidants and not leave them in care of strangers,” he said.

Addressing the children of Ikosi-Ejinrin, Prince Ademola, the chairman of Ejinrin Youth Organisation described rape as a crime against humanity.

“I don’t know what the world is turning to because I don’t see the pleasure any sane man would derive from forcefully molesting a girl.

“This act is condemnable, it is against natural justice and I stand with people prescribing capital punishment for rape,” he said.

In furtherance to the incessant rape incidents recorded in the community, Prince Ademola submitted a petition to Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA Chairman on the barbaric increase on rape cases and the proactive measures to be taken to address such ugly trend in the vicinity.

Also speaking, Mrs Zainab Olanrewaju, General Secretary of CNI, described rape as animalistic behavior and urged capital punishment for offenders.

Olanrewaju said that the NGO would continue to collaborate with the government and other corporate organisations in the fight against violence against women and girls.

“We cannot imagine the sight of a lady being raped, so, I am standing with those calling for capital punishment for perpetrators.

“We are also appealing to men to desist from this heinous crime,” she said.

Also, Mrs Olushola Alade-Raji, condemned all acts of violence against women.

Alade-Raji urged government to listen to renewed calls for a more stringent law against rape, adding that the incidents were becoming alarming in our society.

Mrs Funmilola Kassim-Ayoola, decried the latest increase in rape incidents in the country.

According to her, “women are not free in this country anymore and our children are no longer safe again.”

MKassim-Ayoola, urged parents to always ensure that children dressed decently before leaving home to guard against undue exposure.

Hon. Anthony Ajewole who received the petition on behalf of Elejinrin of Ejinrin Kingdom, commended the CNI and EYO for coming out to sensitize the people of Ejirin on evil of violence against women in the community and in the society at large.

“This public awareness campaign is first of its kind in Ejinrin and I commended the organisers for such laudable initiative, ” he said.

Ejinrin condemned the act of rape and called for stringent punishment for offenders to deter people from committing rape.
