COVID-19: Rivers State Governor, Wike Sacks Permanent Secretary
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the withdrawal of assignment from the State’s Permanent Secretary, Sunny Okere, with immediate effect.
This was announced in a statement signed by Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim.
Okere was fired for flouting and obstructing the enforcement of COVID-19 guidelines.

Okere was guilty of obstructing the Ministry of Health officials, who went to Oyigbo to enforce the established guidelines on public burials.
“Burial ceremonies are also reportedly being conducted in clear breach of the 50 persons maximum attendance limit such that a serving Permanent Secretary had the temerity to chase away officials of the State Ministry of Health who went to enforce the established guidelines on public burials at Oyigbo,” the statement read in part.
The governor in a live broadcast said the removal of the Permanent Secretary is a warning.
It was reported some weeks ago that the Rivers State Governor, Wike, had imposed a ban of wedding and burial, adding that if it must be conducted, it had to be under the watch of an assigned governmental personality.
Wike noted that the effort put in place by him is to curb the spread of the virus in the state.
