A Few Things To Know About New IRT Boss, DCP Tunji Disu

  • Disu has attended several professional courses both at home and abroad.

On Monday, August 2, 2021, news broke that Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has appointed DCP Tunji Disu to provisionally replace beleaguered supercop, Abba Kyari at the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigerian Police Force.

Disu’s appointment comes in the wake of corruption charges levelled against Abba Kyari, whom the FBI says aided and abetted popular internet fraudster, Ramon “Hushpuppi” Abass in many of his underhanded schemes that defrauded a number of US-based firms to the tune of millions of dollars.

While a full-scale investigation is being launched into Mr Kyari’s alleged involvement with Hushpuppi, The IGP, in a bid to fill the vacuum left by his suspension appointed DCP Tunji Disu to run point at the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force.

As the new IRT Boss, Tunji Disu, a supercop in his own right with a magnificent service record, takes up this higher responsibility, here are few things you didn’t know about him.

Tunji Disu, a quintessence of humility, hails from Lagos Island, with maternal links to Epe Division, Lagos State. Having grown up in Ajegunle, (the jungle city) he is often described by many of his contemporaries as a thoroughbred Lagosian.

He is a Deputy Commissioner of Police who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the Lagos State University (LASU) and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.

He is a former Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos State, was the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He had also previously served at the State CID, Rivers State as the Deputy Head of the Unit. He is also a former Commander of the Nigeria Police Contingent to the African Union (AU) Peace Keeping Mission in Dafur, Sudan.

Disu has attended several professional courses both at home and abroad: Small Arms Smuggling Training in Botswana, Internet Fraud Training at the Cambridge University, UK, Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, Forensic Investigations and Criminal Intelligence Course at the University of Lagos, amongst others.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations and Chattered Institute of Personnel management, amongst other professional bodies.

Disu’s appointment indeed echoes as a tremendous triumph for Epe Division, which has over the years produced a long list of decorated professionals in various facets of civil and public service.
