  • A resurgent Newcastle United side gets reminded who the big boys still are in English football as they fall to a 2-0 defeat.

  • Casemiro and Marcus Rashford on hand to deliver the club its first trophy in 6 years.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Manchester United have ended their six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United, under Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils defeated the Magpies 2-0 to give manager Erik ten Hag his first trophy at the club. The result was a welcome relief for United, who have not won the Premier League since 2013, when legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

United last tasted success in 2017, when they won the League Cup and the Europa League under former boss Jose Mourinho. But since then, they have been without a major trophy, leaving fans anxious for a return to glory.

The game against Newcastle was a closely contested affair, with Eddie Howe’s side putting up a spirited performance. However, they were unable to break down a resilient United side that took the trophy with goals from Luke Shaw and an own goal from Sven Botman.

Ahead of the final, much of the talk had been about the length of time since either side had won a major trophy. Newcastle’s last major silverware was the FA Cup in 1955, while United’s last trophy before the League Cup was the 2017 Europa League.

Newcastle had not appeared in a cup final since 1999, when they lost to United in the FA Cup. Despite this, the Magpies were not overawed by the occasion and put pressure on United from the start.

Allan Saint-Maximin had some good moments down the left-hand side for Newcastle, but United’s David de Gea was equal to his efforts. United took the lead in the 33rd minute thanks to Casemiro, who beat the offside trap to head home Luke Shaw’s free-kick.

Just six minutes later, United doubled their lead with an own goal from Sven Botman. Wout Weghorst played a brilliant through ball for Marcus Rashford, whose shot took a deflection off Botman and flew past goalkeeper Loris Karius.

The second half saw Newcastle attempting to put the pressure on, but United were more than willing to soak it up and try to hit their opponents on the break. Despite the introduction of Alexander Isak at halftime, Newcastle struggled to create too many opportunities, with United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka keeping Saint-Maximin quieter in the second half.
