The Founder of Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has been named the 2024 winner of the Best Nigerian Patriot Award.
The announcement comes after a human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, was accused of defaming the nonagenarian in his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.’
The award was confirmed in a letter dated December 11, 2024, from the Association of United Nations Ambassadors For Peace. The letter, co-signed by the association’s Chairman of the Selection Committee, Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon, and other key members, noted that Babalola’s recognition was based on his “detribalised nationalism and impact on various sectors.”
The association highlighted Babalola’s contributions, including founding Afe Babalola & Company (Emmanuel Chambers), a legal firm known for nurturing seasoned lawyers across Nigeria. It stated that Babalola was selected from a pool of 20 elder statesmen due to his consistent efforts in improving the society.
To celebrate the award, the association will host a ceremony on January 9, 2025, in Abuja, where it will also distribute Christmas food packs and a transport stipend to 300 registered widows under the National Association of Nigeria Widows (NANIWO).
