Eko Hot Blog reports that the abductors of a traditional ruler, Oba Clement Jimoh of Oso Ajowa Akoko in Akoko West Local Government Area of Ondo State, have contacted the family of the victim, demanding a sum of N100 million to secure his release.
The demand came about 72 hours after the monarch was abducted.
Oba Jimoh was abducted on Thursday at about 10.15 pm at his residence by some armed men who took him to an unknown destination.
The gunmen reportedly shot sporadically into the air when they stormed the residence of the victim.
They were also said to have shot at the monarch’s main door to gain access into his residential building before whisking him away.
“The kidnappers have contacted the family and demanded N100million,” a source told Punch.
Meanwhile, residents of the community have sought spiritual assistance as they organised an inter-denominational service for the safe return of the monarch.
A community leader, Mr Soji Ogedengbe, disclosed that an interdenominational prayers, fasting, and vigils were ongoing for the purpose of getting the kidnapped monarch released.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, said operatives of the command were still in the forest to rescue the monarch.
“Efforts are still ongoing to rescue the victim,” the police spokesperson said.
The demand for ransom comes hours after the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, gave the staff of office to five monarchs.
Akeredolu, who was represented by his Deputy, Lucky Ayedatiwa, said his actions were a pointer to the government’s belief in the efficacy of the traditional institution as a vehicle for promoting peace, harmony, and unity among the people.
