Abia Election Results Await As INEC Prepares To Reassemble For Collation

  • INEC has announced that the suspended collation of the Abia State guber election will resume today.

  • INEC had on Monday, announced the suspension of the collation of the election results following allegations of overvoting in some areas.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disclosed that it will resume the collation of the Abia State governorship election results today by 4:00pm.

The Presiding Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, Professor Nnenna Oti; and the State Administrative Secretary, Clement Oha, who were invited to the INEC headquarters in Abuja, over the controversy from the Obingwa results, were on their way back to the state, to complete the process.

This development was confirmed by the INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Abia State, Mrs. Rebecca Jim.

It would be recalled that INEC had on Monday, announced the suspension of collation of the Abia governorship results due to attacks in Obingwa Local Government Area and allegations of infractions, especially over voting in some areas.

The INEC statement announcing the suspension of collation reads partly: “The commission met today, Monday 20th March 2023 and reviewed the conducted of the Governorship and State Assembly elections held nationwide on Saturday 18th March 2023.

Arising from the meeting, the commission took the decision to suspend forthwith, further collation of the Governorship election results in some part parts of Abia and Enugu States.

“It will be recalled that our offices in Obingwa Local Government Area were invaded by thugs yesterday, Sunday 19th March 2023 and our officials held hostage in relation to the collation of result from the Local Government Area.

Similarly, reports from Enugu State call for a review of the result for the Governorship election from the two outstanding local governments of Nsukka and Nkanu East.
“Consequently, the Commission hereby suspend the collation of results in Obingwa LGAs of Abia State and two outstanding local governments of Enugu.”

Before the suspension of collation, the Labour Party (LP) was leading with over 92,000 votes from the declared results of 16 out of 17 LGAs in the state.
