The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) triumphed in 15 of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Abia State during the local government elections held on November 2, while the Young Peoples Party (YPP) claimed victory in the remaining two LGAs.
Prof. George Chima, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), announced the results on Saturday at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital. He stated, “We have fulfilled the mandate we received upon our inauguration on September 5.”

“It wasn’t an easy task, but we went above and beyond to raise awareness about the election across the state,” Chima added.
Emphasizing the importance of the election, he remarked, “This commission has not conducted an election with over 12 political parties participating in recent times. This, in itself, is a milestone for us.”
Chima characterized the elections across all 17 LGAs as “free, fair, and credible.” He noted, “We have managed to complete a task that typically takes six to twelve months within just two months.”
The commission chairman congratulated both the winning candidates and the opposition, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace in Abia. “In any election, there are winners and losers, but the priority is to ensure that Abia remains peaceful. I urge everyone to uphold this peace,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to security agencies for their support and commended political parties for adhering to the rules throughout the electoral process.
