Abia Govt To Begin New Minimum Wage Payment By October

Governor Alex Otti has assured workers in Abia State that the new minimum wage will be implemented in October 2024. This announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press conference in Umuahia.

Kanu confirmed that the wage increase would apply to all categories of workers and fulfills Governor Otti’s commitment to the workforce in Abia. He emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the current administration’s dedication to employee welfare.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that following extensive negotiations with labor representatives, the Federal Government has recently approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000.

In addition, the Commissioner announced that within two weeks, the State Government would begin constructing modern court facilities in each of the 17 Local Government Areas to ensure uninterrupted administration of justice.

He also highlighted that the Governor will start the construction of a 19.4-kilometer road in Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas as part of the RAMP project.

Kanu praised Abia State for ranking first in the recent National Examination Council (NECO) results, attributing this success to the ongoing educational reforms by the current administration. He expressed optimism that the state’s performance would continue to improve in the coming years.

Furthermore, the Governor plans to host the Abia team that participated in the recent Paralympic Games to celebrate their achievements.

Commissioner for Sports, Ananaba Nwobilor, expressed pride in the Abia team’s performance in the Under 15 National Youth Games held in Delta State, where they secured 31 medals: seven gold, 12 silver, and 12 bronze. “Abia came 10th overall, marking a historic achievement for the state,” he noted.

The Commissioner revealed that the government’s significant financial investments in sports are beginning to yield results, mentioning that six young athletes discovered during the latest All Secondary School Games in the state are now being trained in Hungary.

Additionally, two players from the Abia Angels have been loaned to a European club, and another rising talent, Nmesomachi, is currently receiving a full scholarship in the United States to play soccer.

Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, who was present at the briefing, stated that the planned court halls will meet modern standards. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, also attended the event.
