Speaking during the visit, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the profound significance of the project, describing it as a symbol of healing, remembrance, and renewed unity.
“This project represents healing, history, and homecoming. We are proud to be part of this initiative that resonates deeply with our diaspora brothers and sisters,” she said.
She praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and foresight in promoting diaspora engagement and investing in heritage tourism, particularly in Badagry — a historically significant town known for its role in the transatlantic slave trade.
The “Door of Return” project, once completed, is expected to serve as a major cultural and tourism destination globally. It aims to attract diaspora investment, promote cultural exchange, and reclaim historical narratives by creating a physical and symbolic site of return for Africans around the world.
Also present during the visit was Hon. Solomon Sanu, the member representing Badagry in the Lagos State House of Assembly. He expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that the entire Badagry community is eagerly anticipating the commissioning of what he called a “historic tourism edifice.”
