Abiru, a former Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Bank Limited, Nigeria, is returning to the senate for a second term.
He was first elected as the senator of Lagos East Senatorial district in a bye-election on December 5, 2020, after the death of the occupant, Sikiru Osinowo.
Before his ascent to the senate, Abiru was the executive director at First Bank Nigeria Ltd (2013–16).
He was also the Commissioner of Finance, Lagos State, between 2011 and 2013.
The lawmaker was appointed in July 2016 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as group managing director to lead the turnaround of the regulator-induced takeover of the then troubled Skye Bank, in a bid to preserve the stability of the overall Nigerian Financial System.
The successful completion of the assignment gave birth to today’s Polaris Bank Limited.

In his time in the senate, he has provided relief items to several of his constituents and sponsored projects.
On the other hand, Eshinlokun-Sanni, the senator-elect of Lagos Central, is the immediate Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Before his rise to the upper chamber of the national assembly, the state lawmaker was a member of the Lagos Assembly representing Lagos Island from 1999 to 2003.
In 2005, then Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu, appointed Eshinlokun-Sanni as his Senior Special Assistant on Political and Legislative Matters.
He left the role in 2007 and was the Chairman, Lagos Island Local Government, from 2008 to 2014.
The senator-elect returned to the state assembly in 2015 before winning the race to represent his senatorial district in the Nigerian senate.
Meanwhile, INEC is yet to declare the winner of the senatorial contest in Lagos West.
The APC candidate, Oluranti Adebule, is up against the PDP candidate, Segun Adewale, and eight other candidates.
