Abuja Arrests Contractor For Sabotaging Streetlights To Win Repair Deals
The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has reported the arrest of a foreign contractor involved in the vandalism of streetlights in Abuja, allegedly to secure new contracts for repairs.
AMMC Coordinator Felix Obuah disclosed the arrest on Tuesday, following an inspection of streetlight repairs ordered by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. Obuah, without naming the contractor, revealed that the individual and their company are well-known, and emphasized that the full weight of the law would be applied.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Obuah noted that initial suspicions pointed to scavengers as the culprits, but investigations uncovered the involvement of the contractor. The inspection team found vandalized sections in 18 of Abuja’s 21 streetlight lots, and repair efforts are currently underway.
He shared that a report detailing the findings and the ongoing maintenance would be submitted to the FCT Minister, with all parties responsible facing legal action.
“The minister has directed us to ensure that Abuja is well-lit,” Obuah stated. “We inspected almost 18 lots today, where we found extensive vandalism, yet my team has managed to restore lights in areas like Yar’adua Way and Jabi, although some spots still need repair.”
Expressing disappointment over the extent of the damage, Obuah commended his team for their efforts in maintenance and vowed a swift resolution. He added, “We believed scavengers were behind the vandalism until we discovered that prominent contractors, including expatriates, were involved in undermining government efforts.”
The detained contractor faces charges backed by substantial evidence, and Obuah confirmed that the report would ensure both the vandals and their buyers are held accountable.
“We cannot allow miscreants and contractors to sabotage the government’s efforts by vandalizing essential infrastructure,” he concluded.
