Nigeria has officially shown interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) announced this after a meeting on April 3 in Abuja. However, the plan can only go ahead if the Federal Government gives its full support.

In a statement, NOC’s spokesperson Tony Nezianya said hosting the Games would help Nigeria show its progress, raise its international reputation, and grow sports culture in the country.
He called the bid a special chance to show Nigeria’s development, boost its image globally, and inspire young athletes.
The last time Nigeria hosted a big sports event was in 2003, when Abuja held the All-Africa Games (COJA 2003). NOC said that event proved Nigeria could successfully host large international competitions.
If Nigeria wins the bid, it will bring major investment in sports infrastructure, especially in Abuja. These projects will benefit future generations and strengthen the sports economy.
Besides buildings, hosting the Games will bring economic and social benefits. Visitors from around the world would help local businesses and hotels grow. Organizing the event would also create jobs and help people learn new skills.
The NOC said the bid shows that Nigeria supports sports excellence, unity, peace, and cultural pride.
The next Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to 29, 2026. Glasgow also hosted the Games in 2014, the same year Nigeria tried but failed to win a bid, losing to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
