Julius Abure Remains Labour Party Chairman – Obi, Otti Declares

  • Julius Abure remains Labour Party’s recognized National Chairman.
  • No leadership crisis justifies defections, says Hon. Aguocha.
  • Defectors acted for political survival ahead of 2027 elections.

The Labour Party’s leadership has once again been affirmed, as Hon. Obi Aguocha, a federal lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Constituency in Abia State, declared that Julius Abure is the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that speaking to New Telegraph, Aguocha, a close ally of Abia State Governor Alex Otti, addressed the recent defection of some Labour Party lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He dismissed claims of a leadership crisis within the Labour Party, suggesting the defections were motivated by personal and political survival strategies.

“There’s no political party, especially the top three in Nigeria, that doesn’t have its own issues. APC has their problems, PDP has theirs, and the Labour Party, of course, has its challenges. However, the Labour Party’s leadership has remained steadfast in resolving these issues,” Aguocha stated.

Addressing concerns about the defection, he noted that some lawmakers cited a perceived division within the Labour Party.

However, Aguocha clarified that the courts have already ruled in favor of Abure’s leadership. “By way of the determination of the court, Julius Abure, whether right or wrong, is the chairman of the party. So, there’s no division in the Labour Party,” he affirmed.

Aguocha also highlighted that most of the defecting lawmakers hail from states without Labour Party-controlled governments. He suggested this played a significant role in their decision to switch allegiance, especially with the 2027 general elections in view.

“They may be under pressure, considering the difficulty of contesting future elections without support from their state governments,” he added.

Despite these defections, Aguocha expressed confidence in the Labour Party’s resilience and determination to uphold its values and navigate the challenges ahead.
