The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, has announced plans to commence kidney transplant surgeries by the first quarter of 2025.

The initiative aims to provide relief for patients with kidney failure and curb the rising trend of medical tourism.

Prof. Ahmed Umdagas, ABUTH’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), revealed this during an interview on Sunday. He stated that the hospital’s Urology Centre of Excellence would be operational by 2025, equipped to deliver top-tier urology services.

“Most of the machines and equipment needed for kidney transplants are already in place, and our personnel have been thoroughly trained. A few remaining infrastructural adjustments will be completed shortly,” Umdagas said.

The CMD also highlighted plans to introduce an Amenity Wing designed for affluent patients, offering private rooms and specialized services. This wing will feature a dedicated hotline and a website, enabling patients to book appointments seamlessly with specific specialists or professors.

Additionally, ABUTH has made significant investments in advanced cancer care, with contracts awarded for linear accelerator machines. It also boasts cutting-edge imaging equipment, including a fully functional 128-slice CT scanner and 1.5 Tesla MRI machines.

“Our charges for services like the 128-slice CT scan are significantly lower compared to overseas rates. While similar services abroad cost over $200 (N300,000), ABUTH charges only N30,000,” Umdagas noted.

The hospital has also expanded its offerings to include lithotripsy (non-invasive stone-breaking procedures) and has celebrated over five successful in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cases in collaboration with partners. Plans are underway to establish a dedicated IVF unit in future budgets.

Umdagas reaffirmed ABUTH’s commitment to providing high-quality medical care, emphasizing its efforts to reverse the reliance on foreign medical facilities and offer global-standard services locally.
