Adamawa State Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff Face Salary Delays

Approximately 5,000 teaching and non-teaching staff employed under the Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) in Yola are yet to receive their November 2024 salaries.

This delay affects more than half of the 9,000 workers drawing salaries under the board in a state where workers are typically paid on the 23rd of every month.

The ongoing screening exercise of workers by the Adamawa State Government has been cited as the reason for the delay. Mohammed Abubakar, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), confirmed that some non-academic staff, such as cleaners, gardeners, plumbers, and matrons, are also affected.

He revealed that the delay in salary payments for some teachers and non-teaching staff is partly due to their failure to submit certificates as previously requested. Over 4,500 teachers have since submitted their certificates, and Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is expected to give a directive for the withheld salary payments soon.

Abubakar urged those who have not yet submitted their certificates to expedite the process within the week. He emphasized that necessary steps have been taken to address the challenges associated with the screening exercise, ensuring a smoother verification process for all affected employees.

He appealed to teachers to be dedicated to their duties, as they entered a contract with the government to render service and receive their wages accordingly.

Governor Fintiri had issued a directive early in October this year for all civil servants to submit their certificates for verification.

He had said that the screening was vital because many people were holding offices and drawing salaries for which they had no qualifications.

He said it was necessary to weed out unqualified civil servants not only to assure the quality of service but also to give job opportunities to young people with the required qualifications.
