Adebanjo Declines Offer To Become Afenifere’s Substanstive Leader
One of the founding members of Pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, says he can’t assume the position of the group’s substantive leader due to his age.
Adebanjo said he would love to see a much younger person at the helms of the group’s affairs, noting that the group can’t afford to have another nonagenarian managing its affairs as it will hamper the realization of the group’s objectives.
Ekohotblog had on Tuesday reported that the former leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti stepped down on Tuesday at the age of 95.
He attributed his decision to step down to the group’s need to have an strengthened organisation with a more potent and effective approach to “tackle the monstrous invasion of our culture and pride as a people”
“Only a more alike and active leadership can achieve this. At 95 I am hardly able to provide such and so it is time for me to step aside”.
In an interview with Daily Independent, 92 year-old Adebanjo said he would have preferred a much more younger person be the group’s leader, adding that the issue will be looked into in the near future
He said he was not at the meeting where he was chosen has the group’s new leader, but he has, however, accepted the mantle of leadership.
He stressed that it is time for younger generation of leaders to take charge of Afenifere.
“When a 95 year old stepped down for a 92 year old, what difference does it really make? I don’t have to be the leader to contribute my quota. There is nothing I have been doing now that I can’t still do”.
Adebanjo also announced that there is nothing he will do differently in his new position as Acting leader of the group.
“There is nothing new to add. What we have been doing in Afenifere is what we will keep doing because we are a consistent organisation. Afenifere is a principled organisation. We believe in restructuring of Nigeria and true federalism. We also believe in good governance without corruption” he said.
