Former Osun State Governor and APC leader, Chief Adebisi Akande, has urged a shift from outdated methods in Nigeria’s education system.
- He advised universities to focus on producing graduates with skills that contribute to economic growth.
- Akande warned that failure to adapt could hinder the country’s global competitiveness.
Speaking with EkoHotBlog at his residence in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, Akande emphasized the need for practical and skill-based education during a visit by Ekiti State University (EKSU) Vice Chancellor Prof. Babatola Ayodele and other officials.

He said, “Universities must stop awarding degrees that lack relevance to national development. Education should equip students with skills that drive economic progress. Going to school is just the start of learning how to work.”
Akande, an alumnus of EKSU, praised the university’s management for its achievements, including being ranked Nigeria’s best state university by Times Higher Education. He described the recognition as a testament to strong leadership.
Ayodele highlighted the institution’s commitment to practical education, noting that all students graduate with skills for entrepreneurship or employment. “Our graduates are equipped to succeed, not just to search for white-collar jobs,” Ayodele said.
The visit was aimed at gaining guidance and support from the elder statesman to further enhance the university’s growth.
