A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Lagos State Chairman of the party, Segun Adewale, has thrown his full weight behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential ambition, describing him as the “Messiah” Nigeria urgently needs to rescue its economy and heal national wounds.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, Adewale rebuffed rising internal criticisms of Atiku’s continued interest in the presidency, particularly from influential voices within the PDP. He insisted that Atiku remains the most experienced and capable candidate to lead Nigeria forward.

“He has been tested and tried. He is one of the few politicians with genuine contentment and a clear understanding of Nigeria’s political terrain. Unlike others, he doesn’t seek power just for personal gain,” Adewale said.

His comments come amid stiff resistance to Atiku’s expected candidacy, with figures such as former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Bode George, and former Ekiti Governor, Ayodele Fayose, openly opposing another Atiku run. George had recently called for Atiku’s resignation over alleged anti-party activities, while Fayose vowed to fight his ambition if he contests.

But Adewale pushed back hard, accusing Atiku’s critics of serving selfish interests. “Anyone within PDP saying Atiku should not contest in 2027 is working for the opposition. They are not for the party or for Nigeria — just for their pockets,” he said.

He further slammed internal resistance to Atiku’s proposed coalition strategy, which he said was the only realistic path to ousting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“None of the opposition parties can defeat APC single-handedly — not even Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party. Only a united front, led by someone with reach and experience like Atiku, can make that happen,” he added.

Adewale also took the opportunity to raise concerns over Nigeria’s electoral process. Drawing from his own electoral experiences in Lagos, he alleged systemic flaws that often frustrate popular will.

“It’s not about how smart or popular you are; it’s about the system. If we don’t fix this, 2027 will be a repeat of the same injustice. We need electoral reforms now,” he said.

In closing, Adewale echoed the growing public demand for good governance and credible leadership.

“Nigerians are tired of poor governance. They want change — they want a breath of fresh air,” he concluded.
