AFCON 2023: Cameroon FA Rejects Samuel Etoo’s Resignation
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has rejected an offer of resignation from its president Samuel Eto’o.
Eto’o, 42, offered his resignation during a meeting of Fecafoot’s executive in Yaounde on Monday night, in which the former striker requested for other members of the board to also offer their resignations ‘in good faith’.
The meeting was held as an evaluation of Cameroon’s performance at the men’s Africa Cup of Nations, in which they won just one of their four matches and exited at the round of 16 stage after a two-goal defeat against Nigeria.
A statement from Fecafoot outlined how their executive “unanimously rejected” Eto’o’s offer of resignation, “thus renewing their confidence in him to continue”.
Eto’o was elected Fecafoot president in December 2021 with his tenure overseeing two AFCON tournaments alongside the 2022 World Cup.
Rigobert Song — Eto’o’s former international team-mate — was appointed Cameroon head coach in February 2022, replacing Toni Conceicao following the nation’s AFCON semi-final defeat against Egypt in a penalty shootout.
Song, 47, oversaw Cameroon’s qualification for that year’s World Cup with a play-off win over Algeria, but his side exited at the group stage in Qatar with four points from their three matches.
Cameroon endured a disappointing AFCON campaign, picking up four points from their three group matches before being eliminated by Nigeria.
Song’s record as national team manager has come under scrutiny, with just six wins from his 23 matches in charge.
