AFCON: Former Super Eagles Striker Gives Honest Assessment Of Team
EKO HOT BLOG reports that former Nigeria striker, Victor Ezeji says although his compatriots, against Sudan, were not as fantastic as they were in their opening match versus Egypt, “overall, it was a decent performance”.
The Super Eagles secured a second-round berth in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON): Augustine Eguavoen’s side defeated Sudan 3-1 in the second match of Group D last Saturday.
With the victory in the encounter, which took place at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua, Cameroun, the Super Eagles, for the first time, won their opening two matches at an AFCON in consecutive tournaments, according to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF).

Goals from Samuel Chukwueze in the third minute, Taiwo Awoniyi (45th), and Moses Simon (46th) were all the three-time AFCON winners needed to progress to the second round of the tournament.
Reacting to the Super Eagles performance at AFCON 2022 so far, Ezeji believes the West Africans are improving as they chase a fourth AFCON title in Cameroon.
“First and foremost, the most important thing was that the team won. They weren’t that fantastic the way they were against Egypt but we came out with a victory,” Ezeji, 40, told Goal.
“It is understandable that when you play against an opposition whose standard is low, you drop to that standard and I think that was what happened.
“When we played against Egypt, we stepped up our game and played so well that Nigerians even celebrated the performance.
“Yesterday’s game was not that bad, but it was not as good as the first on Tuesday. Overall, I think it was a decent performance.
He added: “We’ve seen virtually all the teams playing at Afcon, and we’re not saying Nigeria is the best but if they continue the way they’re going, they will definitely become favourites.”
Nigeria who lead Group D with six points after two games are scheduled to play Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.
