Afghanistan: Poverty, Hardship Deepens As Taliban’s Grip Tightens
- The Taliban took over the government of Afghanistan to the surprise of many across the world; including America who underestimated them. As they prepare to lead the country, they will be combating numerous issues ranging from crumbling economy, unpaid salaries, hunger, cashless banks, and mass hunger in the country.
EkohotBlog reports that the extremists’ group has been celebrating the withdrawal of US forces after 20 years of war. However, that is not the case for ordinary Afghans, a very difficult life coupled with a crumbling and uncertain economy makes them restless.
After seizing the country for the second time, the Taliban celebrated their victory, saying that Afghanistan is finally a “free and sovereign” nation.
United States President; Joe Biden had described the eventual withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan as the best option to end the country’s longest military campaign. Government employees in Afghanistan have not received any pay for months; banks are barely functioning due to the country been cut off from international financial institutions after the Taliban took over the country on August 15.
Thousands of Afghans have been internally displaced due to the long conflict between the extremists’ group and the government of Afghanistan.
The decision by some international institutions, such as the World Bank and IMF – to offer financial aid to the country represents another version of trouble for the Taliban.
Afghanistan central bank board members have urged US President Joe Biden and IMF to release funds for the country. The United States froze nearly $9.5bn in assets belonging to the Afghan central bank last month.
