Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos, Nigeria (March 6, 2024)—the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership Award ceremony brought together African heads of state, diplomats, and dignitaries at the Lagos Continental Hotel on Wednesday.

The event honored the remarkable leadership of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), for his outstanding contributions to Africa’s development.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania graced the occasion, joining her counterparts from Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde, and the President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, in celebrating Dr. Adesina’s achievements.
“Your dedication to uplifting Africa’s economies and empowering its people is an inspiration to us all,” President Hassan remarked.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Adesina expressed humility, stating, “I am honored to receive this esteemed award named after the iconic Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a true visionary and champion of African progress.”
The event, hosted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, witnessed the presence of dignitaries such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Nigerian heads of state, including General Yakubu Gowon, and the former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of the occasion, saying, “Lagos State is proud to host this prestigious ceremony, which honors exceptional leadership and promotes the ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a true son of our soil.”
Other notable attendees included the Chairman of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN), Amb. (Dr.) Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and Senator Daisy Danjuma.
