Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a developing situation at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Saturday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has temporarily closed one of the runways.
This decisive action followed an incident where an XEJET Airlines aircraft, with registration 5N-BZZ, skidded off the runway and landed in the grass during its arrival from Abuja.
The aircraft, carrying 52 passengers, touched down at 11:29 am, but its unexpected excursion prompted FAAN to initiate a controlled disembarkation process. Fortunately, all passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft.
However, the closure of one runway has raised concerns about potential delays and disruptions to airport operations, as the airport is now limited to a single operational runway.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has swiftly responded, deploying a team to investigate the incident.
Bimbo Olajide, the NSIB spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating, “Our teams are there and on top of the matter.” However, she remained uncertain about the prospects of reopening the runway on the same day.
This incident comes just 16 days after the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authorities (NCAA) ordered the suspension of Dana Air for a comprehensive auditing, following a similar runway excursion involving one of their MD-82 aircraft last month.
