EKO HOT BLOG reports that Binani, who narrowly lost the 2023 Adamawa gubernatorial election to incumbent Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the switch as opposition forces continue to reposition ahead of the next election cycle. Fintiri won with 430,861 votes, while Binani secured 398,738.
A two-term federal lawmaker, Binani served as Senator for Adamawa Central between 2019 and 2023, and had earlier represented the Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Her political base and grassroots reach have made her a major force in Adamawa politics.
Her husband, Professor Ahmed Modibbo, a respected academic and businessman, is one of the wealthiest personalities in Yola, further boosting her political capital in the state.
Binani’s move comes just days after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar exited the PDP, although he has yet to formally announce his new party. There are strong speculations that Atiku is aligning with the emerging opposition coalition, in which Binani is also expected to play a strategic role.

The defection also comes amid reported tension between Atiku and Governor Fintiri, his longtime ally. Binani, who now enjoys Atiku’s backing, is expected to consolidate her influence within the ADC and push forward a renewed political agenda.
